I had modified the database with OpenOffice in Linux, saving it in XLS format. I don't think it has anything to do with the "SH100TOOL.EXE", but rather when the OS copies the file onto the meter. I agree about the "good old days", there are many things I miss from them, but there are also many things that I'm glad got left behind. Also, have all the software I need to function on it, so that if the main laptop happens to go south, I could continue to function until I got back home and repaired the broken one. Happens to have a very decent sound system for a laptop, and I have two more just like it laying in wait. Also have most of my MP3 collection on there. Have many movies ripped to AVI format and stored onto USB sticks. One is used for media entertainment when I'm working out of town. Hey, I still have several 98se laptops floating around here. However, I think at least through WinXP, they didn't break the more common XON/XOFF (software) or the later CTS/RTS (hardware) flow control designs.

They did when Win98/WinME were superceded completely break serial I/O for DOS-based applications (LapLink 3.0a, for example) which depended on direct access to the serial port via POLLING. It is remarkable that Microsoft went as far a XP without totally breaking serial I/O in its entirely.
Satellite transponder list update#
I have found it necessary to hang on to a Windows XP laptop with a REAL serial port just to update these older devices (meters, STBs, WAPs) that only support the serial/nullmodem interface. Now, if someone would test with Vista and 7, we could have a list of knowns for future reference. 2K and XP write the file in a manner that lets the Sat 100 update as designed. One might want to remember that, as it might cause issues with something other than a satellite meter. So, it appears that Microsoft changed something between XP and 8.1 in how it writes files. I wasn't trying to get you do the Linux thingy, I was just recounting my experience with the meter. It is the Entire group that makes this forum a success!
